Midas, King of Phrygia, was doomed to turn all he touched into Gold; Hagiwara depicts Midas with bloated and distorted features and gives him the ears of an ass; as Midas is unable to escape his curse - even as his food turns to Gold, so the figure of Midas appears imprisoned, his large body filling all space available in this print.
