Kazutoshi Sugiura Biography

Kazutoshi Sugiura was born in 1938 as a child of war, growing up during the reconstruction phase of Japan after World War II. Sugiura was not interested in the subsequent industrial boom and as a young man chose instead to study art at the public College for Art in Kyoto, where he graduated in 1963.

Afterwards he pursued graduate studies in art. Already at this time he was interested in silk screen printing and nihonga - traditional Japanese painting.

Kazutoshi Sugiura had already such a masterful command of printing techniques that the International Graphic Art Society in New York ordered a set of silk screen prints from him.

Kazutoshi had studied classical Japanese painting intensely since 1967. Five years long he engaged himself in material in the Kyoto National Museum of Antiquities, the national museum of art history in Kyoto and there in 1968 he began a 4 year restoration study program focusing on gold grounding and gold framing.

Kazutoshi Sugiura Description

Kazutoshi Sugiura has created his own distinct, layered style of silkscreen printing. His work focuses on flowers, in particular the iris and peony. Sugiura was born in Kyoto and attended the Kyoto College of Fine Arts. Showing exceptional talent as a student, he was commissioned by the International Graphic Art Society in New York to do an edition of silkscreen prints. After graduating in 1963, he spent four years studying classical Japanese painting and the art of gold leaf restoration at the Kyoto National Museum of Antiquities. The use of gold leaf and rich saturated colors has become the hallmark of his art and brings to mind the art of traditional Japanese screen painting. He uniquely applies the gold leaf to the paper prior to the silkscreen process. This gives his works a textured, three dimensional quality that adds to his dramatic, yet intimate, compositions. His designs have an immediate appeal and are timeless, elegant and serene.
